What's Wrong: Tuition Hikes

These days it seems like the price of gasoline is about the only thing that rises as fast as the price of tuition.

Over the past six years, UC and CSU tuition nearly doubled.

Let's put it another way: tuition has risen 94% in the past six years, while inflation has averaged only 3% over the past decade.

Students and families have not had enough political power to stop this backdoor tax.

In 1977, almost 17% of the state general fund was allocated to higher education; today, that figure is only 11%. Student tuition increases have practically replaced the shortfall in state general funds.
